Goldfield, Iowa TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covered past tenses, including past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Working with past tenses has some similarities in the way that we work with present tenses, for example, past perfect continuous follows the same structure with using the verb "to have". The material in this unit provided more examples of teaching activities than previous units. I see that students may have the same trouble working with past tenses as they do with present tenses. I can imagine the irregular past simple verbs being a challenge for some students. Memorization of this vocabulary comes will be learned through different techniques than remembering some simple rules for using past tenses. We learned that activities such as detective games, matching exercises, and narrative story telling can be helpful with practicing past tenses. Story telling or discussion seems like a great activity as it will allow the students to speak from their own experience. Overall, teaching the past tenses and present tenses can follow similar methods. It will be important to make sure that our students fully understand the differences between then and help them when bad habits form. While speaking, using the incorrect tense may still be understood due to context in the conversation. A lot of practice and activities that promote correct usage should help make using tenses far more natural for the student.
