Unit 10 shows two ESA demonstration videos. If I was a student in the first demonstration video, I would have felt discouraged. The first thing I noticed was that the teacher did not introduce himself to the students. This introduction section in a lesson, especially a new lesson is very important as it will establish rapport in the classroom. The lesson was more teacher centered than student centered. The teacher had a care-free attitude throughout the entire lesson. This was shown in his choice of hand gestures. He often described the lesson material as “easy” which can demotivate the students. This can result in the students losing interest in the lesson. The teacher could have engaged the students more. He entered the classroom and jumped into the lesson which can be very confusing for non-native speakers. Some of the students seem to have knowledge of the subject area but have a hard time responding to the teacher’s questions. This may be because of the teacher’s approach in getting the message across to the students. The teacher was very unfriendly and he did not seem to be enjoying the class. He hardly made eye contact with the students. Moreover, he took to much time to write the information on the board. He should have prepared most of the information beforehand so that no time was wasted. The lesson was not very organized. He looked a little confuse at different times in the lesson. The teacher’s teaching style was very aggressive. Also, the lesson was taught without finding out if the students understood the material. He rushed the students to complete the worksheet. This is not a good quality of an ESL teacher. Teachers should always make sure the students take time to read the material on the paper and understand what is required of them. The teacher also showed favoritism in the activate stage of the lesson which also shows his poor teaching abilities. On the other hand, the teacher’s voice was good and he managed the class well in terms of his position. Overall, the lesson was boring and the teacher was not very encouraging. I started to fall asleep while watching. I enjoyed the second demonstration video. The teacher entered the classroom with more confidence and he also had a friendly appearance. If I was a student in the classroom, I would have felt excited about the lesson ahead. He introduced himself and he also asked the students to introduce themselves. This introduction will help to establish some kind of rapport in the classroom. He started the lesson by eliciting from the students things they are familiar with in order for them to get a better understanding about the lesson ahead. The students often smiled during the lesson which shows that he was very entertaining. The teacher used tangible things related to the lesson in order to make it more practical and interesting. He was encouraging as this is shown when he congratulated students for their efforts. A more student centered classroom was established as he encouraged the students to talk to each other. He also ensured that there was equal participation in the classroom. His back was not turned to the class very often which will prevent the students from getting distracted. The teacher tried to make sure the students understood the worksheet as he gave them time to go through it and he checked to see if they were doing the right thing. He motivated the students and he didn’t rush them to complete the worksheet. This shows that he is very patient and is willing to wait and ensure that the students understand the material being taught. The classroom arrangement was horseshoes which is typical for a student centered classroom. The ESA method was clear and the teacher made a smooth transition from one stage of the lesson to another. The second ESA demonstration video was more effective. The teacher was more engaging and the lesson was student centered. The learning objective was also clear and executed well by the teacher.
