This unit discussed the various options available for testing and evaluation for ESL students. This can occur on an informal basis, or on a regularly scheduled more formal basis. Ideally, students should receive feedback on an ongoing basis. This will allow them to have an idea of how they are progressing. Providing regular progress reports also helps to keep students motivated.
Informal feedback can take the form of tutorials that are conducted one on one or in with the entire class. Tutorials provide an opportunity to review learning objectives and student performance.
Student evaluations of the course can be very valuable to determine if the students feel the course is too easy or too difficult as well as the workload associated with the course.
A variety of tests (each having a different purpose) were outlined. Placement tests are used to ensure that a new student is placed in the appropriate level class. Progress tests should ideally be used on a regular basis to measure what language has been acquired and what has been forgotten and needs review. Progress tests should incorporate all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) and should only include material covered in class.
The unit concluded with a list of formal exams that are used to demonstrate a students knowledge and ability with the English language including TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC as well as others.
