Past tense is very similar to present tense. It also contains simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous forms. There are very basic rules when dealing with past tense that helps to identify which category a sentence falls into. Past simple was words ending in ed, past continuous contain the use of was/were in the sentence, past perfect contains had in the sentence, and past perfect continuous contains had been in the sentence.
