I agree with the unit in stating that establishing a rapport between students and the teacher is very important. It's important for students to become comfortable with each other and be in an environment that will encourage their studies. I was under the impression that referring to the course book the first day was okay but it's more important to establish rapport, discover student needs, understand student interests, and learning each students English level. This is done by creating a survey, have students talk about themselves using games, and creating a needs analysis. Additionally, in the beginning of each lesson, it's important to have a warmer to engage students. Using hangman, pictionary, memory games, and tongue twister will help engage the class. Although students may have different levels of English, it is important to use a wide variety of material or pair stronger students with weaker students. With reluctant students, using pair work, role play, tape recorder, and ensuring correct pronunciation will allow these students to participate. Finally, it's important to encourage students to use English as much as possible.
