Unit 14 was a pleasant break from the intensity of unit 13! This unit discussed how to best incorporate course books and other lesson materials so they are most beneficial to students. This unit echos the sentiment discussed through out the course that instructor flexibility is key. No matter what course materials an instructor includes in their class, they should not be so reliant on them that they are rigid in their teaching style. Students will quickly lose interest and motivation if the class environment become predictable.
There are a variety of materials that an instructor can include in their classroom. Authentic materials in English (newspapers, menus, films etc.) are popular because they are real. Students are exposed to real life materials and it allows them to build confidence when they understand it. Authentic materials should be carefully selected to make sure they fit the needs, interests and skill levels of the students.
Created materials are popular becasue they can be scaled to fit the level of the students. Created materials are typically used to supplement material found in a coursebook. They include fun activities such as crosswords, role-play cards, flashcards etc. The unit provided several examples of created materials.
This unit concluded with a discussion on course books. The advantages and disadvantages of course books were outlined. Information on the best use of course books as well as different options for using course books was provided. A very valuable section on how to effectively analyze course books was also included in this unit.
