This unit covered all the basic parts of speech in the English language: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and the dreaded articles, which torture so many foreign learners of English. Different types of each part of speech were discussed, as were their roles and usage in sentences. Gerunds, which are formed from verbs, were also mentioned, as were participle forms.
To me, all of this is very familiar; my elementary school English classes were excellent, I was raised on Schoolhouse Rock, and I have studied other languages extensively, giving me a fairly good grasp of grammar in general. However, I have had trouble in the past when explaining certain parts of speech, particularly articles, to foreigners who are studying English. As native speakers, we are not always capable of articulating the concepts behind the grammar we naturally use correctly. I was very happy to read the descriptions of different types of articles in this unit, as well as the correct order for different categories of adjective (size, age, color, material), because these are things I have had difficulty explaining in the past. Completing the tasks for the unit was useful as well, because I had to think about how I would explain these concepts to students--something I will have to do often when teaching English.
