During the first lesson, it is good to focus on two areas: getting to know each other, exchanging personal information (so you get an idea of group interests and language level).
When your students arrive, they need a chance to settle down into the class and get their minds focussed on the lesson ahead. Your job is to make them relaxed and comfortable speaking English in a positive environment; and a great way to achieve this is by planning an effective warmer.
Large classes are a reality in many countries and they pose particular challenges. In a large class children in pairs and groups can help each other and learn from each other. They don't get bored listening to teacher talk. When there are many children in a class they can share many different ideas and interesting life experiences. This stimulates the children and enlivens those parts the lesson where children can discuss and learn from each other.
Some students are reluctant to participate in class. It is important to encourage these students to participate. There are some things we can do to encourage a reluctant student to participate in class. Use role-play, pair work, ask the student questions that you are confident he or she can answer correctly, respond positively whenever the student asks a question or makes a comment etc.
