Pronunciation involves individual sounds, word stress, sentence stress, intonation, and word linking.
English pronunciation involves too many complexities for learners to strive for a complete elimination of accent, but improving pronunciation will boost self esteem, facilitate communication.
Phonology describes the way sounds function and operates at the level of sound systems and abstract sound units.
Stress is the relative emphasis that may be given to certain syllables in a word, or to certain words in a phrase or sentence.
In spoken language, grammatical words (auxiliary verbs, prepositions, pronouns, articles, …) usually do not receive any stress. Lexical words, however, (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, …) must have at least one stressed syllable.
Intonation describes how the voice rises and falls in speech.
The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is rise/fall intonation.
The fall/rise pattern indicates that the speaker wants the person to whom he's speaking to respond or confirm.
