In this unit, we see the use of teaching equipment and aids. The following are resources often found in classrooms and training centers.
White or black board. All classes should have a board because they draw and hold students’ attention effectively.
Interactive white board. These require to be connected to some sort of computer or laptop.
Overhead projector. They hold students’ attention.
Visual aids. Common ones are; photos, pictures and real objects. They have to be big enough.
Worksheets and work cards. They can be bought from the publisher or made by the teacher.
The cassette recorder. They accompany many course books and blank cassettes can be used to record authentic materials, record the student’s communication etc.
CD players. These have largely taken over from cassettes over the last few years.
Videos and DVDs. For effective use of the video in a class, the monitor should be big enough and located in the right place.
Video camera. One of the major uses is to record the students during an activity and then play it back for analysis and discussion.
Dictionaries. This is the single most useful tool available to students.
Course books.
Resource books.
Photocopiers. They are necessary for copying materials that are not contained within the students’ course books.
Computers. They are gradually becoming as much a part of the English language classroom.
Online resources.
I have learnt to always use teaching aids because they reduce teacher talking time, make the lesson more interesting and effective.
I have learnt that films shown in class should have a purpose and task.
