The structures of the past tenses are not so different from those of present tenses looked at before. Past tenses denote actions that happened at a time in the past and are differentiated by the different tenses. First the past simple for completed actions in the past, then we have the past continuous for continuing actions in the past. We then have the past perfect tense which feature the verb to be in 'have' in the past (had) and the perfect continuous taking the -ing form. It is also important for the students to learn the different verb forms i.e. the regular verbs e.g. stop, and the irregular verbs e.g. eat. There is no specific formula of changing the irregular verbs in the past so teachers should encourage students to master the way these verbs change. Teachers also need to be conversant with these verbs so that they are of great help to students.
