The unit defines the productive skills of the English language: speaking and writing. It distinguishes the differences between the two skills. However, both are of equal importance. Speaking skills require accuracy and fluency factors to be considered. Whereas, writing skills need to consider that there are several factors such as handwriting, spelling and punctuality. In order for students to successfully learn these new skills and differentiate it from their native language, their interests need to be taken into consideration. Some ways to encourage student participation and interaction are: pair-work, group-work, purposeful activities and sufficient controlled and guided practice before fluency activities. People communicate for several purposes such as they have a desire to say something and listen to something of interest.
