This unit is about course books and lesson materials.
Materials can be divided in two groups. The first is, authentic materials for example magazines, newspapers, menus etc. The second is, materials created by the teacher. These are usually designed by the teacher to replace and supplement materials from the course book. Authentic materials are used because; they are real and therefore more interesting and motivating, they can be geared to the interest of a particular group of students etc.
Course books. They usually consist of a set of materials. Students book for classroom, work book, teacher’s book, cassettes and video.
Course books have the following advantages. –they are expected by the students, they offer continuity and progression, etc.
However, they also have disadvantages. For example; dictate what to be taught, they don’t always fit the specific needs and interest of all classmates etc.
There is a best way to use these course books. - don’t over base all lessons around the course book, explore ways to match the book to the interest of the students.
Basically, there are four options for course book use; omit, replace, supplement and adapt.
When analyzing a course book, the teacher should consider the following; price, the availability of a book, design etc.
I have learnt that the teacher has to create his or her own materials to either supplement the course book or replace sections that are not suitable for the class.
