The basic premise of this unit was to identify how one can be a good teacher and how one can learn to recognize good versus bad habits in his or her students. In a nutshell, a good teacher is sensitive and not selfish; the student comes first. The teacher should be familiar with the student's level of enthusiasm, cultural ideology towards teaching and learning, and personal motivation. I found the portion on Asian students of particular interest because I volunteer at an non-profit ESL class and I usually do a one on one session with the new students. A few weeks ago I had a Chinese gentleman whose English was quite good in comparison to the other students, however, he was very reticent to speak and although he knew the answers, I had to very gently coax them out of him. On the other hand, I had a woman from Puerto Rico who spoke no English, but she was very out-going and not the least bit reserved and had no hesitancy to meet any challenge put before her.
