This unit discusses the different kinds of conditional sentences and the rules for reported and direct speech. The four different kinds of conditional sentences are zero, first, second, third, and mixed conditional. When going from direct to reported speech the events, verbs and time expression need to change. This usually means that what is talked about in the present becomes the past or backshifts. What I have learned from this unit is the many different rules when dealing with direct and reported speech. It is a topic that is easy to talk about trough examples, but actually explaining the rules is something that can be very difficult. The chart and diagram in this unit give good examples of how to explain this topic to students.
