There are four present tenses: present simple, present continuous (progressive), present perfect, and present perfect continuous. The present simple tense's basic form uses one word, for example "read" or "write." For most verbs, the simple present is the base form of the verb, except the third person singular, which adds an "s" or "es." The present continuous tense adds the auxiliary verb be and the present participle (verb plus "ing") of the main verb. For example, "I am reading" or "They are writing." The present perfect relates the present to the past by using the auxiliary verb "have" and the past participle (for regular verbs, the verb plus "ed"). For example, "I have read" or "they have written." The present perfect continuous tense relates past activities to the present, with the implication that the activity will continue or was in progress for a while. This tense is made using the auxiliary verb "have" plus "been" and the present participle. For example, "I have been reading" or "They have been writing."
