This unit covers the basic principles of lesson planning and why it is important.. it is especially useful for a teacher new to teaching ESL to create a logical sequence of instruction for the course as it forms a record of what has been taught and can be used by a substitute teacher if needed. For these reasons It is important that the plan be written down. The written plan should be kept simple. A structure for lesson planning should be chosen carefully and adhered to. It is not necessary to script the lesson but the plan needs to be organized for quick reference during the class. In addition to specific phases and activities a good lesson plan includes basic information about the class, the learning goals, and anticipated problems for the teacher as well as the students. Before each class the lesson plan should be reviewed, all materials and equipment checked and the classroom seating modified as needed to support the lesson. One of the more important roles as a teacher is to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment so standing at the door to welcome and chat with students as they arrive enhances this goal.
