This unit brought me back to the stress of taking a college linguistics course. Reading phonetics is like having a fever dream while saying the alphabet to me. Phonetic symbols are very strange for me and I always view them as my "Alice in Wonderland" of languages. Basically I am falling down a rabbit hole where everything is upside down. I had never used phonetics to study a language itself, I had only used them to study linguistics as a whole. I don't think students should focus on learning the phonetic alphabet over learning the alphabet of the main language taught in class. It would bring up too much confusing, especially among English students.
