The past tenses communicate about a time/period in the past. the sentence structure is not any different from the present tense structures only that the state of the verb changes and where have is used we use had. the teacher therefore needs to formulate explanations and activities that depict past periods. the uses of the four past tenses have also been clearly outlined according to the purpose or time frame like past simple for completed actions. past continuous for interrupted or unfinished actions in the past, past perfect for actions that occurred before other actions in the past and past perfect continuous for longer actions or situations in the past that had continued uninterrupted up to the past moment of reference
