Teacher talk time should be reduced when possible, avoiding jargon, complicated explanations, and including mimes and pictures. TTT is necessary for language instruction, giving directions, and establishing rapport.
Classroom seating will largely depend on class size, student personalities, and space available. Separate tables and horseshoe or circle arrangements are more informal and allow for easier group or pair work. However these arrangements can encourage discipline issues, and prevent the teacher from maintaining eye contact with the entire class. Neat rows are typically the only option for large classes. Advantages of this arrangement is that it allows the teacher to move freely and reduces discipline issues.
Discipline issues can often arise with family problems, lack of interest or respect, boredom, and low self-esteem. Some issues can be prevented by providing variety in the lessons, changing up group work participants, being consistent, enthusiastic, and punctual, and creating rapport with the students. A teacher may create rapport with students by letting them share their opinions, keeping lesson material personal and applicable, and being positive and showing interest.
The teacher should be conscious when using gestures, his voice, and position to communicate the students in class. Gestures should clear and straight forward; the voice should be varied and appropriate for the lesson; and classroom position should depend on what is expected of the students. For example, the teacher should be in front of the class when giving directions for an activity, but may sit when monitoring student progress.
