English has many defined parts of speech. It is important to understand our own grammar if we are to teach English. Even if an English teacher is a native speaker, that does not mean he automatically can understand the underlying grammar of what comes naturally to him. For example, we may normally speak adjectives in a certain order, but we might never have noticed that the order is usually "size, age, color, material". This sort of knowledge is useful when teaching the language.
