This unit completes the overview of basic grammar commonly taught in EFL. There is much inofmation in this unit that is confusing to me. I will do my best to follow the advice in the unit and focus on structure. Modal auxiliary verbs do not change in form according to the person and are followed by a verb in it’s base form. They are used to add meaning to the main verb and to express differing degrees of formality. There are 2 ways to approach the teaching of modals. Select one modal auxiliary verb and one usage and focus on that in a particular context. A second approach is to choose a context and then use each of the most appropriate modal auxiliary verbs in a different way. Active and passive voice are also a focus of this unit. Both have the same general meaning but in the passive voice the agent is not important. Another important point is that only transitive verbs are used in the passive voice. To form the passive voice the object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
