I found evaluating students an essential part of any language course. At some point, the teacher can ask weheter any of the concepts are understood and are clear enough. In order to move on to the next stage, we certainly must evaluate the progresses made. I have always seen periodical assessements as a "regroup and consolidate" moment. Not something that has to be seen as a feared trial for the student, but a way to certify the work done.
