Classes come in all different shapes an sizes. I have taught some language classes that only had 3 people, and then I've had others ranging up to 30. The techniques to be used vary greatly between the different class sizes and the homogeny of the class level. Things always go better with small classes where everyone is at the same place, but there are advantages to a difference in level. Having higher level students "teach" lower-level, having lower-level clarification questions on instructions gets them practice and lets a higher level student hear non-native English being spoken poorly. The first couple lessons definitely lets the teacher know where the students are at and is also important for rapport building.
