This unit gives a brief overview of the teaching methodologies and how they influenced the Engage, study activate method developed by Jeremy Harmer in the late 1990’s. The goal of teaching English as a second language is to create a comfortable and non threatening environment. The student should communicate freely especially during the engage and activate phases. Teacher participation should be kept to a minimum during these two phases especially as the teacher should be presenting the material during the study phase. All feed back should be given with the goal of promoting self awareness and improvement. Always give the student an opportunity to self correct with either a nonverbal cue or non threatening question. Allow student to student corrections where culturally appropriate. It is more appropriate to correct in the study phase or activate phase when a student has finished speaking or presenting. Never use your finger to point and use an open hand with a stuent’s name to encourage participation.
