Modals are auxiliary verbs that expresses ability, permission, possibility or obligation, eg must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may, ought and might. They can be used to express many different concepts and can change the meaning and formality of the main verb. They do not change in person form and are followed by another verb in base form for present/future but are more complicated constructions for past ideas.
Passive voice is used the when person performing the action is not know or not needed eg a child was knocked off his bike on a busy street. A verb is in passive voice when the subject (the most important thing or person) of the sentence is ‘acted on’ by the verb.
Relative clauses – defining and non-defining - can be used to give additional information about a noun. They are introduced by a relative pronoun like 'that', 'which', 'who', 'whose', 'where' and 'when'. Eg. ‘I lost the sweater that my mom made me’ (defining) or ‘the sweater, that my mom made, is still lost’ (undefining). The last section deals with the three types of the rather complex phrasal (multi-word) verbs: transitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.
