This unit draws attention to the fact that teaching and learning – as receptive skills – present potential challenges for EFL students. Teachers need to be aware of difficulties/problems related to motives for reading and listening, the language used in texts, topics in texts, comprehension tasks. Reading and listening effectively requires specific skills that include predicting (headline), scanning, skimming, understanding details, and deduction (gaging context). Furthermore, language - sentences, words etc – can add additional complexity for students. Listening can be more challenging than reading simply because the latter “captures” the words allowing for review and processing. Teachers need to be very thoughtful when choosing reading texts and topics, and the ESA Patchwork format offers versatile ways to blend approaches/techniques in order to foster receptive skills and enhance comprehension and synthesis.
