A variety of teaching aids and equipment are essential for EFL teaching. Some form of board could be considered mandatory since it so effectively draws and holds students’ attention and can be used for so many things including drawing, writing, sticking things on, projecting etc. Teachers should ensure they understand how to use a board to its full advantage, which involves planning, preparation, method and technique. Interactive white boards require special attention since they are electronic (can also be unreliable) and offer different interaction features. Like IWB’s, computers can be attached to projectors that make it possible to display material, play videos and dvds, or access the internet for content etc, all onto the classroom board or even an appropriate wall. Despite the advantages of technology, real objects, photos and pictures as visual are still effective in engaging students, along with wallcharts, worksheets and cards. A video camera (also a computer or smartphone camera) can prove extremely helpful for recording and playing back student/class activity. The use of more advanced technology such as tablets, digital note books and intelligent smartphones, will increasingly impact how students learn and work in the classroom – for example, all my language learning materials are on my tablet (with pen), and my dictionaries are also on my smartphone. CALL (computer-aided language learning) is emerging as a wide range of information and communications technology applications and approaches to teaching and learning foreign languages.
