This unit explains the form, usage and typical student errors for each of the four present tenses - present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. Affirmative, negative and questioning formats are also reviewed. The common errors students make with these tenses highlight how challenging it is for ESL learners to grasp the subtleties of various forms - scope for confusion is understandable. I learned that what is largely instinctive to me as a native speaker, will likely prove intimidating. My take away: a range of activities and good preparation for the Activate Stage of the lesson should help students put the theory in practice with confidence.
