This unit covers modal auxiliary verbs and the passive voice, as well as phrasal verbs and relative clauses. Modal verbs help express degrees of certainty, obligation, ability, or levels of politeness. The passive voice changes the focus away from the agent of an action to the object of the action: "Huckleberry Finn was written by Mark Twain" (the emphasis is on the book when written this way). Uses of relative clauses are explained, as is the construction of phrasal verbs.
