This unit provided descriptions of the various types of roles, characteristics and responsibilities of both learners/students and teachers. Age was also discussed in depth as a learning factor and the different levels for different age ranges was broken down and categorized. The most important lessons for me from this unit were as follows: * Many personality traits, such as kindness, patience and motivating are part of being a "good" teacher. However, I feel that the relationship and rapport a teacher builds with their students is most important. Unless a certain level of caring and trust is felt by the student, then and only then will the student put forth his/or her best effort. * "Good" learners may be highly motivated, but unless they're willing to listen and experiment and use the language outside of the classroom, their progress is likely to be hindered. I guilty of this first-hand as a current, adult, student of Japanese. Therefore, it's critical that a teacher inspires and makes every effort to build the confidence of his/her students. * Understanding the motivation to learn a new language for each individual student is important for a teacher. Some students may just be there because they feel pressured that they NEED to learn English (for financial gain, etc.). These students are likely to be less motivated than students who have a genuine interest and WANT to learn. With this in mind for a teacher, it's important not to isolate the former and treat everyone with the same in an attempt to maintain the same high level of motivation and inspiration for everyone.
