Conditional sentences refer to past, present and future situations and often contain “if” or “when”. There are five main conditionals that indicate something certain (Zero Conditional), something possible/probable (1st Conditional), something hypothetical/unreal in the present or future (2nd Conditional), something hypothetical/unreal in the past therefore with an unreal/impossible outcome (3rd Conditional), and a mix of the 2nd and 3rd Conditionals describing a hypothetical past situation with a hypothetical present outcome. This grammar can present challenges to students, and requires careful presentation and lots of usage practice. The unit explains how to create direct speech (something somebody said) into reported speech, a technique that involves “back shifting” which typically requires changing the verbs, places and times. There are exceptions, but students should be encouraged to first master back shifting before learning the exceptions.
