Unit eighteen covered modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, phrasal verbs. Modal verbs are utilized before another verb to add meaning to the main verb. Model verbs can be used to express obligation, ability, possibility, prohibition, the degree of formality or advice. To help students learn and practice modal verbs, teachers can establish rules, look at signs and use role-play activities. There are two types of passive voice, the active and the passive. In the active voice, the focus is on the subject. In the passive voice, the subject or ‘doer’ is less important. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb and another particle, usually an adverb or a preposition. There are three types of phrasal verbs. Intransitive verbs do not have a direct object, transitive verbs have a direct object and with transitive separable verbs, you can separate the verb and the particle in a sentence.
In this lesson, I have learned about the eleven different usages of modal auxiliary verbs. As well as how to teach the modal verbs. I also became more familiar with the passive and active voice. Lastly, I became aware of the three types of phrasal verbs.
