Unit three covered the theories, methods, and techniques for teaching English. The unit covered the different methods dating from the seventeenth century to present the methods and approaches used today. A method that motivates, exposes the learner to the language and gives the learner an opportunity to use the language has elements known as ESA- Engage, Study and Activate. The engage stage is used to engage students or arouses their interest so that they will be involved with the lesson. In the second stage, students are focused on the language and how it is constructed. At this point, exercises are given to make sure students understand the material. The last stage is known as the active stage. In this stage, students are encouraged to use the language that they know freely and communicatively. The unit also covered many ideas for the engage phase that arouses students’ interest. Lastly, the unit covered correction techniques and giving positive feedback to encourage students.
After completing this unit, I have learned about the three stages that will help me motivate and expose the students to the language. I have learned about different activities that I can implement in class at every stage of ESA. As well as structure an ESA based lesson according to the student’s language level. Lastly, I learned about correcting mistakes and errors. Most importantly I have learned that it is important to motivate language learning and arouse interest in a way that will not discourage the student.
