Unit seventeen covered teaching equipment. There are many teaching aids that a teacher can utilize in a classroom to make lessons more engaging and effective. Boards can be utilized for writing, drawing and projecting overhead transparencies. Before writing on the board it is useful to make a board plan on a piece of paper. Some of the basic principles for board- work: having a clean board, keep the board neat, use different colors and highlighting techniques, and only put essential information. Interactive whiteboards are another option, however, there are a few things to take into consideration when using IWBs. For example, it is important to test and have a back- up plan in case of a malfunction. Overhead projectors are useful for showing overhead transparencies. For example, it is a good tool for feedback, OHTs can be re-used, show emerging patterns, and OHTs can be overlaid to highlight language points. Visual aids are utilized to illustrate meanings, attract attention, and elicit language. Worksheets are useful in adapting material, creating authentic material and act as prompts. CD players and video cameras can both be used as an audio resource and to analyze activities. Dictionaries and online tools are great for pronunciation and usage. Resource books are useful for adapting, replacing and supplementing material from a course book. Lastly, computers and online resources offer a plethora of tools a teacher and student can use.
I have learned about equipment and teaching aids I was not familiar with. This unit gave many examples of aids and websites that I will be able to use in the future. I learned about resources that I can use to prepare for lessons and resources to use in a lesson.
