Unit eleven covered receptive skills- reading and listening. There are two reasons for reading and listening: entertainment and purpose. Entertainment refers to listening to or reading information because we find it enjoyable, while purpose refers to reading and listening because it helps achieve a goal. There are five specialist skills that are needed for reading and listening. First, predictive skills are used to predict or guess the content of the text from the headline or title. Second, scanning for specific information is used to extract only the information that is useful or to know the results. Third, reading and listening for detailed information when we need to understand something on purpose and in greater detail. Fourth, skimming for a general idea is used to have a general understanding of a text or dialogue. Lastly, deductive skills help us understand the meaning of individual words or phrases beyond the obvious. The unit also covered the importance of choosing a topic, creating interest and the importance of having comprehension tasks incorporated into the lesson. Not just to make sure the material is understood, but to promote understanding of the material.
Through the example lessons in the unit, I have learned how to create both a patchwork and straight- arrow lesson. This unit has also helped me better understand each phase of a lesson, what goes into each phase, and how to incorporate pre-teaching grammar structure and vocabulary into a lesson. Seeing examples of different lessons has helped me review and put into practice what I have learned thus far. Lastly, I have learned about the importance of receptive skills and how to incorporate the skills into lessons.
