Unit 14 tells about the course books and lesson materials. It covers the different types, advantages and disadvantages of various learning materials that ESL teacher can utilize. Mainly, they are categorized into 2 groups such as authentic materials and created materials. The first group of learning materials is anything a native speaker can hear or read like programs, magazines, newspapers, tv guide, etc. This type of materials should be chosen carefully since these are not graded. It can be used if you want a material to be interesting and motivating. On the other hand, created materials are those who are specifically designed for teaching a skill. There are limitless of options like flash cards, gap fill activities, word puzzles, and crosswords and alike. Under this category is the course books which consist of students book, teachers guide, workbook and sometimes digital form of materials. Course books are good to use because they are graded and intended for teaching. It offers continuity and progression so you can monitor the students’ progress and development. However, it has disadvantages too like tempting the teacher not to be creative and resourceful and sometimes they are boring to use because they are so predictable.
