Unit twelve covered speaking and writing, which are productive skills. There are two equally important aspects: accuracy and fluency. Accuracy activities are conducted during the study phase, controlled, and concentrated on ensuring correct language output. Fluency activities are conducted during the activate phase and concentrated on experimentation and creativity. In the classroom, there are three types of speaking activities a teacher can utilize. First, controlled activities are accuracy based and the language is controlled by the teacher. Second, creative communication activities are fluency based and the language output comes from students. Third, guided activities are accuracy-focused, a bit more flexible, and allows a bit more creativity.
The second section of the unit covered the importance of writing skills. For writing activities, handwriting, spelling, the differences in written and spoken English need to be considered. People in different parts of the world utilize different writing systems. A reader can be influenced negatively if a student does not have training in the formation of letters. Spelling can create misunderstandings if words are spelled incorrectly. Some words are pronounced the same, however, the words have a different meaning and are spelled differently. Lastly, punctuation may be different from that of other languages and prove a challenge for students. Students should be exposed to different styles of writing and the different layouts of writing to help them with writing.
In this lesson, I have learned about the productive skills and what I can do as a teacher to create lessons based on speaking and writing. I have learned the importance of encouraging students to practice both speaking and writing skills.
