Unit nine covered lesson planning. In this lesson, the reader learns why lesson plans are used, how to go about planning and what goes into a lesson plan. A lesson plan creates a logical sequence, it is a working document that you can refer to while teaching, it forms a record of what has been taught and what will be taught. A lesson plan should be simple, structured, balanced and flexible. What is included in a lesson plan depends on the individual. For an inexperienced teacher, it is advisable to include the following: teachers name, date and time, class level, room number, expected number of students, language point, learner’s objective, personal aims, phase, timing, interaction, teaching material, anticipated problems for teachers and students. Learner objectives show what the teacher wants the student to be able to accomplish by the end of the lesson. Language point shows the theme around the lesson. Timing allows a teacher to allocate time for each phase of a lesson plan. A lesson plan can be simple, or it can be structured, it depends on what the teacher is comfortable with and the experience the teacher has.
I have learned the importance of creating a lesson plan or a sequence of lesson plans to direct a lesson. I have also learned what information is needed to create a lesson plan that will keep me organized and that is simple and direct. Lastly, I have learned the importance of self-evaluation. It is important to monitor the lessons to improve one’s own skill, see what is working and what is not working.
