Unit five covered class management. A teacher’s presence and voice play a major role in classroom management. This is done through eye contact, voice, and gesture/ actions. Using gestures and actions help teachers convey meaning to the students. It can also reduce unnecessary teacher talk time. Also, an important tool a teacher can have is his/her voice. It can be a deciding factor in the effectiveness of class management. Another way to manage the classroom effectively is by grouping the students in certain ways for class activities. It is useful for the following reasons: it ensures that the students have understood the instructions, indicates who is speaking, maintains discipline, and encourages participation. Seating arrangement was also covered. It depends on class size, the room, age, and type of activity. The three types of arrangement are rows, horseshoes and separate tables. The unit also gave the advantages and disadvantages of seat arrangements, and when to limit teacher talk time. To increase student talk time and student interaction, there are ways to illicit that. This is through the participation the whole class, group work, pair work and individual work. I have learned through the above examples, how to manage a class depending on various factors. Also, if there are management issues I will be able to manage the issue or avoid it. For example, when writing on the board, I will not talk, and I will try to write on the board before class or while the students are working on a task. I will be able to address discipline through different methods.
