Read and listening are receptive skills that require extra attention when teaching. For one, there may be a language/cultural disconnect between the language used and the language understood (e.g. football in America versus football/soccer in France). It is also important to make sure that the reading level is suited to the students. For example, giving a beginner level class excerpts of Shakespeare is a bad idea. This is because it may cause the students to lose interest in the language, lose confidence in themselves, both, and even more. Most importantly, it is important to capture the interest in the students in the reading/listening material. Using the ESA methodology, the Engage phase should focus on drawing the attention and promoting the motivation of the students on the topic (which should vary in time to suit a broad range of interest). The Study phase needs to address the challenging vocabulary or grammatical structure that will appear in the reading material. Furthermore, it should introduce the material as well as making sure comprehension of the material. The Activate phase should allow the students to utilize what they learned from the material or using the knowledge to practice other skills.
