The English grammar is much more complicated than we, as a native speaker, assume. There are much more fundamental rules than we normally think about. Even something thought to be as simple as a noun have many different sub-divisions such as proper nouns, collective nouns, abstract nouns, and more. Although native speakers use these within every sentence, we rarely consider the mechanics of why and how to do this. This becomes especially important when it comes to confusing subjects such as gerunds, participles, and possessives. Compared to other languages such as Latin or French, the English grammar rules are a lot more unruly. There are many more irregulars and exceptions, especially when we take into consideration daily usage of the words. Most of these words we learn by hearing from our peers and parents but must be taught and memorized for students learning English. This is also true in the case of word orders. Although we, as native speakers, can intuitively organize the adjectives into proper order, it may be a conscious task for others. This unit was especially helpful in reminding me of how, where, and what should be used in each situation and brought about a general awareness to my daily use of grammar.
