Tense can be extremely confusing, especially when the grammatical structure is very different from one's native language. The present tense has four different components: present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and present perfect continuous. The present simple tense is usually used when describing routines, facts, habits, present stories, and historical sequences. It is simple in both name and usage; just conjugate the verb to the proper pronoun. The present continuous is generally used for progressing action at the present time. It is conjugated by adding the auxiliary verb "to be" before the main verb and then adding -ing to the main verb. The present perfect is used for past actions that are finished. It is conjugated by adding the auxiliary verb "have" before the past participle of the main verb. The present perfect continuous is generally used for past action continuing in the present and on. It is conjugated by adding the auxiliary verb "have" and then "been" before the main verb with -ing ending. Each of these tenses also has irregular verbs and exceptions to each rule, making them very confusing to even a native speaker. Therefore, it is important to aware of the grammar syntax and to clarify their usage and meaning when teaching.
