Buckfield, Maine TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This was a very interesting unit for me because I've always felt that it's good to discuss what makes a teacher a 'teacher' and a student a 'student'. It was enlightening to read that there are 9 roles a teacher can be even within just one class (Controller, Prompter, Tutor etc) and it gives me confidence to know and recognise what I normally do out of preference and tendency. For example, I generally like to be a Participant and a Model for my students because I feel that this is the one time in their week where they can meet and talk with a native English speaker, not just a teacher. I like to ask questions (Prompter) and also help students along when they get stuck. I find that reviewing these roles has helped me clarify what I am not good at, too. For example, I find it harder to be a Controller because all of the attention is on me and I worry about either making mistakes or seeming nervous.
I also learnt the different levels of ability: Beginner (a learner who has zero knowledge of the language or very basic knowledge of nouns and verbs) Elementary (can create basic sentences and has knowledge of simple vocabulary) Pre-Intermediate (can speak about some topics but still makes basic errors) Intermediate (can speak about many topics and has more vocabulary but still feels limited by mistakes made) Upper-Intermediate (can speak even more broadly on a wider range of topics and has a lot more vocabulary but needs to build fluidity) and Advanced (speaks more fluently and with ease, now needs to learn subtle parts of the language). I found it very interesting to learn about the differences in motivation, behaviour, and experience between adults and YLs. The main ones being that adults have a higher motivation level while teenagers normally do not have the choice to be there in class. Very young learns (2-7 year olds) are keen and want to please their teachers whereas 8-12 year olds are starting to become more involved with making friends. Teenagers are more self conscious than 2-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds who are more receptive to the language and do not mind making mistakes in front of peers. Adults also come with a lot more life experience than any other group which helps with conversation and discussion in class.
I think the part of the unit where I did not learn anything new was about the reasons and motivations for learning English.
