The Past Tenses are very similar and used for different descriptions. I learned the way to use each one is to be aware of the action in the past. I will need to let my students know the forms and irregular verbs as mentioned. All verbs have some kind of form of "to have" and the past participle. I remember the -ing as a continuous form of the verb conjugated. I also noticed continuous tenses, the regular "to be" verb in the present is present continuous and the "to be" in the past is past continuous.
