In this unit we looked thoroughly at the past tenses which include Past Simple for actions completed in the past at a specific (but perhaps not mentioned) time. We can form verbs regularly by adding +ed - walk - walked. There are many irregular verbs however. We also have Past Continuous which is formed by using the auxiliary verb to be in the past (was/were depending on the subject) and a verb ending in -ing. walk - walking. I was walking. We were walking. We use this to describe actions that were in process at some point in the past. We also have Past Perfect, the past equivalent to the Present Perfect. This is the 'past in the past', a way to make sure which event occurred before another past event. We create this structure by putting the auxiliary verb have in the past, had, and adding the past participle. I had gone home when... She had eaten too much.... And lastly we have the Past Perfect Continuous which combines both the perfect and continuous tenses. I had been walking.... She had been running... This is used to describe actions in process before now and up to a certain point in time, either mentioned in the sentence or implied.
