Unit 19 tells us about teaching special groups. Some of the specialized groups are beginners, individual students, children, business English, monolingual class and multilingual class.
The types of beginners are:
• The absolute beginner- knows no English.
• The false beginner- has been exposed to English but did not retain the language.
• The adult beginner- made the decision to learn English.
• The young beginner- lack motivation as they didn’t make the decision to learn English themselves.
• The beginner without Roman alphabet- needs a lot of work on basic literacy skills.
Nowadays one-one lesson has been increasing because there is a need for it as it is geared towards individual needs. However, some teaching activities are impossible with individual lessons and so teachers will have to be creative in getting the message across.
Children have developed curiosity which makes it easy to teach them. However, they also have a short attention span which makes it difficult to teach for long a period of time. The teacher should make th lesson fun,interactive and ensure that it relates to the student’s interest.
Business English involves teaching professionals English in the areas of telephoning, introductions, presentations among other things. Teachers should analysis to help them to determine the objectives of the course. This can be done with questionnaires or informal discussions. The questionnaires and discussions can be in the clients’ native language or English.
The multilingual class is filled with persons from different nationalities. This class is usually held in countries where the native language is English. The students will get more exposure and opportunity to use the language being in an English speaking country. The monolingual class is usually taken in the students’ home country which provides them with fewer opportunities than the multilingual class.
