In this unit we talked about evaluation of students’ levels and progress. There are a number of way to assess a student’s language level; tutorials, evaluation by students and test. Tutorials are more likely to take place with the whole group than individual students. A good way would be to take 10minutes after a weeks of learning to discuss the work you have done in class, discuss the aim of the lessons and if they were met, how students preformed in class and discuss problems. Evaluation of student either through questionnaire or discussion is a good way to discuss if there was enough grammar, if the balance of skill work is satisfactory and plan future lesson as a result of the outcome of the discussion or questionnaire. This promotes interaction, greater awareness among students. Then there are test, we have placement test, diagnostic tests, progress tests, progress tests practice tests and external or proficiency tests. Each one of these test was explained thoroughly in unit 15 especially the external test or proficiency tests. External test can be categorized in three groups, general English, business English and academic English. For each of these categories there are several possible tests to take for general English Cambridge English has about 5 levels of tests from beginner to the higher levels but also CELS is test to test general English. In a similar way for business English and academic English, tests are available either recognized by the business world and academic world for further development. As an ESL teacher testing is something you will omit tingly have to give for because it’s mandatory by the school and should be seen as a useful tool in teaching.
