To learn a new language we start with listening to the sounds, word and sentences, followed by speaking; recreating the sounds, word and sentences. After the listening and speaking phase new learners will start to read and write. Reading and listening are the receptive skills of a language and speaking and writing are known as the productive skill. Although these four basic skills should all incorporated into a lesson for a balanced approach, the ESA technique focuses rather on one in particular skill while bringing other to create an integrated skill lesson. Unit 11 discussed the receptive skills, the reason behind these, different types and how to construct a successful receptive skill lesson. The general problems that might occur, how to approach these language difficulties and what a good teacher should do before the skill lesson. We took a closer look at a straight arrow lesson and patchwork lesson for either a listening or reading lesson, what games might be effective and how to spark the student interest in activities.
