I've learned a great deal about what makes for great and effective teaching, and the roles of teachers and motivations of students for learning English. In regards to teacher roles, I've learned the importance of keeping students motivated and making sure to be patient and listen to each individuals needs, and to keep students' self-esteem up.
Importance was placed as well, in using a variety of teaching techniques, and learning when to use which. For example, there's a time for a more Manager style approach, and a time for a Facilitator style approach. The balance of these techniques is key to a healthy learning environment where students can thrive.
I've also learned a great deal about language levels, and the importance of knowing a students' skill level in order to provide the best resources and knowledge to help them improve without either giving work that's below their skill level, or above as to not intimidate or confuse them.
As well, I've learned the challenges and differences of adult students versus young students. In that adults can be more nervous and have a fear of failure, whereas younger students are more open-minded. Adult students also have more life experience and thus more set in their ways. In addition, I've learned that the majority of adult students chose to learn this skill of English and thus may be more attentive and eager to learn, whereas the younger student may need more discipline.
